Quickbooks gives small businesses a way to control everything financial about their business. With the simple movement of the click of a mouse, you can monitor cash flow, make invoices and stay on top of paperwork such as your resale tax reports.

For some users though, when they try and launch the application, a warning pop up error box comes up that says there is an unrecoverable error that prevents you from using the application. What do you do?

At a high level, the unrecoverable error you experience is something that happens when the software or an update is installed incorrectly or your data file has been corrupted. It may also be that you are attempting to open a company file that resides on an external media drive, attempting to access a file that is being used by another computer, attempting to open a QuickBooks back up file (and not the main file), or attempting to open a company file through an incorrect file path (meaning the file no longer exists in that location). There are numerous reasons for this error and these are some of the most common.

Tips to Resolve an Unrecoverable Error

There are many resources and help guides available online that can help you fix the issues that caused this error. The best help guides can be found on Intuit’s website. Here are a few easy solutions that can help you fix a general unrecoverable error.

Tip #1: Don’t let QuickBooks open all windows on startup
To keep this from happening, double click on the QuickBooks icon on your desktop, then press the ALT key. You will be then be asked for your password. Enter your password and click OK. Your Quickbooks file will open, but as this happens, press the ALT key right away. Once the file opens, release the ALT key.

Tip #2: Change How You Save Your Forms
With your form open, click either the SAVE & CLOSE button or SAVE & NEW button at the bottom of the form. This will save your transaction. Also, when you save the form, don’t leave the cursor on a blank line of the form. Leave the cursor on a line that has a line item filled in instead. 

If you want to print the form, don’t print from the form window. Instead, click the “to be printed” button (Before you save your transaction). When you decide that you want to print the forms, simply choose File, and then go to Print Forms to print the forms you have in your queue.

Tip #3: Re-register the QuickBooks files on your system
*Note: this is for PC users
Close you QuickBooks file. In the START menu, choose the run option, then type bat to re-register the application. Next, restart your computer. When the computer restarts, you can open up QuickBooks and resume operations.
